Call for nominations 2025
Call for nominations for members of NOHEIC's scientific council
NOHEIC's scientific council is a group of scientists from various Quebec universities with research interests in issues raised by contaminant emissions. Members contribute, among other things, to the scientific orientation of NOHEIC's research program.
Within the scientific council, the recruitment of citizens aims to strengthen the diversity of perspectives in scientific decision-making processes. By integrating people from diverse backgrounds, this approach promotes inclusion. This contributes to the development of scientific programming that is better adapted to the realities of the population as a whole, while supporting the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion (ÉDI) promoted by the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT).
The role of citizens
In accordance with NOHEIC's guidelines, and in line with the issues related to the impact of contaminant emissions on health and the environment, the citizens on the scientific council have a role equivalent to that of the other members, i.e. :
- Identify knowledge gaps;
- Prioritize scientific research needs;
- Advise on preferred methods for knowledge development and dissemination;
- Participate in thematic sub-committees as required.
More specifically, citizen members play a valuable role in enhancing the richness of the council's perspectives by bringing in community viewpoints. A maximum of four seats are reserved for citizens, in addition to a maximum of sixteen seats held by members of the scientific community. Terms of office are two years.
Participation conditions and responsibilities
Those recruited must reside in Quebec and be 18 years of age or older. They must come from a community concerned by issues related to the impact of contaminant emissions from smelters on health and the environment, so that they represent the views of these communities. No specific skills, experience or education are required.
Citizens must be available to participate in scientific council meetings, by videoconference and occasionally in person. Meetings are held no more frequently than twice a month. Individuals must be able to share their opinions at meetings and comment on the documents discussed. They must also invest time in preparing for meetings and reading documents.
As members of the scientific council, citizens must also complete and sign a public declaration of interest, and respect the confidentiality of privileged information that may be shared from time to time within the scientific council.
Equity, diversity and inclusion
NOHEIC is committed to fostering a healthy discussion environment, characterized by respectful human relations and free of all forms of discrimination. To this end, the Observatory is committed to promoting equity and diversity within the scientific council by respecting UQAT's institutional objectives on equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
Submission of applications
Anyone interested should submit a form outlining their motivation for joining the scientific council and explaining their interest in scientific discussions. Interested parties can fill in the online form or contact NOHEIC to obtain the documents needed to submit an application by e-mail, post or in person.
