Summary
A narrative of the life cycle of contaminants, from their geological genesis through each stage of transformation to their impact on health and ecosystems. Based on Antoine Lavoisier's maxim that “nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed”, this poetic-historical-philosophical approach invites us to take a reflective step back: the contaminants, personified, tell their own story in the first person. A number of current research projects illustrating the processes of transport, metabolization and accumulation will be presented from the perspective of various disciplines, and emerging perspectives in environmental health will be considered. This approach will shed light on the symbiotic yet conflicting relationship that societies have with the exploitation of metals, highlighting social, technical and scientific transformations, and giving prominence to current and future research projects on environmental health issues in Rouyn-Noranda.
