Iuliana Laura Calugaru

Project manager at Centre technologique des résidus industriels (CTRI) and professor of chemistry at the Cégep de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue

Iuliana Laura Calugaru holds a PhD in mineral engineering. She works in the active and passive treatment of mining effluents. Her work focuses on the modification of under-utilized natural materials, tailings and by-products to increase their efficiency for mine drainage treatment, the prediction of mine drainage water quality, the chemical leaching of metals from various matrices and the valorization of by-products and tailings. Her current work focuses on the use of glycine as a green alternative to cyanidation for gold recovery, the development of a new passive dolomitic drain treatment system for contaminated mine effluents, and the sustainable and optimized extraction of niobium and other critical and strategic minerals (CSMs) from niobium deposits.
