Strong interest in Health Canada’s conference in Rouyn-Noranda

The public conference organized by the National observatory on health and environmental impacts of contaminants (NOHEIC) on July 15 at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue drew the interest of about 40 people, both in person and online. This event gave the public an opportunity to learn more about the new Health-based air quality objectives proposed by Health Canada for arsenic (HBAQOs). These objectives are not regulatory standards but are rather intended to support risk assessment and communication, as well as decision-making regarding air quality management.

The discussion that followed the presentation gave participants the opportunity to ask questions and gain a better understanding of the issues surrounding these proposals, as well as the public consultation process. Participation in this conference demonstrates the public’s interest in environmental health issues and the importance of making scientific knowledge accessible to as many people as possible.

The presentation is now available online

Were you unable to attend the conference, or would you like to review the presentation? The recording of the presentation by Ms. Julie Bourdon-Lacombe, Section head of Air quality assessment at Health Canada, is now available online on the Conferences page of the NOHEIC website.

It is still possible to participate in the public consultation

Health Canada’s official public consultation period ended on July 21, 2026. However, those who still wish to share their views may contact Health Canada to request an extension, so they have time to submit their comments.

NOHEIC encourages citizens, organizations, and anyone concerned about air quality and environmental health issues to review the available documentation and participate in this process. It is also possible to review the brief submitted by NOHEIC as part of this consultation.

Thank you to everyone who attended the conference and contributed to the rich discussions.
