ROUYN-NORANDA, QC, April 17, 2025/CNW/ - The Horne smelter is pleased to inform the public that the average arsenic concentration in ambient air measured at the Horne legal station has decreased by 46.5% since March 2023, reaching 39.1 ng/m³ for the year 2024. This average is below the 45 ng/m³ ceiling stipulated by the current ministerial authorization.

Highlights:

  • Data collected for 2024 at the Horne legal station show that air concentrations of all analyzed contaminants are below targets for the period March 16, 2024 to March 15, 2025.
  • Over 90% of Rouyn-Noranda's urban area has an arsenic concentration in ambient air less than or equal to 7 ng/m³, and 99% less than or equal to 15 ng/m³.
  • Arsenic concentrations in ambient air decrease rapidly with distance from the smelter. The average arsenic concentration in ambient air at Glencore Arena, approximately 500 m from the plant, is 7.8 ng/m³ for the year 2024, down 50% since March 2023.

“These data clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of our teams' efforts to improve air quality in our community. We are all very proud to know that 90% of Rouyn-Noranda's urban perimeter is already at 7 ng/m3 or less. We are all mobilized to continue our improvement and we believe in our success,” says Vincent Plante, General Manager of the Horne smelter and CCR Refinery.

“These results testify to the technical excellence of our teams. We are determined to actively pursue our efforts to meet our objectives and continue to improve our environmental performance,” adds Marie-Élise Viger, Environmental Manager, North American Copper Operations.
