A century of mining activity in Abitibi: spatial and temporal evolution of atmospheric emissions of metals into the environment

The work of this research activity by the Geological Survey of Canada (Natural Resources Canada) will focus on the distribution and mobility of metals, metalloids, and rare earth elements in various natural environments in Abitibi. Although studies were conducted 25 years ago as part of the Metals In The Environment (MITE) program, conditions have changed with the evolution of the mining park and emissions from the Horne smelter. The current work focuses on the cumulative effects of metal accumulation in the greater Rouyn-Noranda area using an innovative spatio-temporal approach that integrates several natural archives. In addition, the risks associated with the remobilization of atmospheric deposits, exacerbated by natural hazards such as floods and forest fires, will also be studied.

The presentation will consist of an overview of the main findings of the MITE project, followed by the objectives of the current activity and preliminary results from the first field campaign. The Geological Survey of Canada is leading this work with the support of several collaborators and local Indigenous communities to form a multidisciplinary team.
