Metal emissions into the environment
A century of activity in Abitibi: spatial and temporal evolution of atmospheric emissions of metals into the environment
Summary
The presentation consists of an overview of the main findings of the Metals In The Environment (MITE) project conducted 25 years ago in Abitibi-Témiscamingue by the Geological Survey of Canada at Natural Resources Canada (GSC-NRC), followed by the current objectives of ongoing scientific research projects in the region and preliminary results from the first sampling campaign. The research focuses on the distribution and mobility of metals, metalloids, and rare earth elements in various natural environments in Abitibi. It also examines the cumulative effects of metal emissions in the greater Rouyn-Noranda area using an innovative spatio-temporal approach that integrates several natural archives. The risks associated with the remobilization of atmospheric deposits, exacerbated by natural hazards such as floods and forest fires, are also being studied. The GSC is leading this work with the support of several collaborators and local Indigenous communities to form a multidisciplinary team.
