Lessons from community collaboration: 50 years of research on the health impacts of contaminants
Résumé:
Throughout my career, close collaboration with communities facing occupational and environmental health issues has proven essential both for improving living and working conditions and for advancing scientific knowledge. This lecture will explore the lessons I have learned based on key milestones from each decade of my collaborative research:
1970: the creation of Community Services at UQAM;
1980: my meeting with the Noranda union;
1990: the shift from occupational health to environmental health;
2000: an ecosystem-based approach to human health;
2010: the invitation from the Grassy Narrows community to participate in their studies on the effects of 60 years of mercury exposure on their health;
2020: recognition of our research.
