Citizen monitoring of contaminants: SCCANER project

« Citizen monitoring of contaminants: SCCANER project »

Summary

This project aims to measure toxic pollution from the Horne Foundry through citizen monitoring in the Rouyn-Noranda region, by training and equipping citizens to sample snow, soil, water and sediment in lakes and streams. This project is presented by the Société pour vaincre la pollution (SVP). Founded in 1970, the SVP is one of Canada's oldest environmental groups, with extensive field experience in community and citizen monitoring of pollution in our waterways. This project was carried out in collaboration with Mères au Front-Rouyn-Noranda and the Coalition Eau Secours. In addition, La SVP was able to count on the participation of the following groups: Réseau vigilance mines Abitibi-Témiscamingue (Revimat), the Rouyn-Noranda group Arrêt des rejets d'émissions toxiques (ARET), Québec meilleur Mine and Mining Watch Canada. Anticipated concrete results of the Citizen Watch program: Through this project, the SVP and its partners aim to generate interest among the Rouyn-Noranda population in order to ensure strong participation in the citizen watch program on the Horne smelter's pollutant fallout in the region.
